What Are the Different Types of Rhinoplasty?
Before diving into the recent and upcoming trends in rhinoplasty, we first have to discuss the different types of rhinoplasty–and which situations they’re most suited to.
They are:
Closed Rhinoplasty:
With closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates precise incisions inside of your nose to minimize scar visibility. The main disadvantage of this approach is the limited visibility of the bone, cartilage, and tissue. However, this rhinoplasty variation generally causes less swelling than open rhinoplasty and can provide correction for minor imperfections, such as bumps or uneven cartilage.
Open Rhinoplasty:
During an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon cuts a small, delicate Z-shaped incision on the underside of your nose between the nostrils. This open approach allows your surgeon to make more accurate changes to the shape of your nose. Open rhinoplasty leaves a tiny incision, but with proper care, the scar fades quickly–and often yields more dramatic results.
Tip Plasty:
Focusing solely on the end of the nose (the “tip”), tip plasty is less invasive than traditional rhinoplasty and does not involve intervention to the nasal bone. As such, recovery time for tip plasty is markedly faster.
Septorhinoplasty:
As a combination of rhinoplasty and septum correction, the surgeon repositions your nasal septum to the middle of your nose to correct a deviated septum and improve breathing. They will also take this time to make aesthetic adjustments to the nose, as in a traditional rhinoplasty.
Revision Rhinoplasty:
Revision rhinoplasty works as a corrective measure when previous rhinoplasty results have left a patient unhappy (either functionally or cosmetically).
Recent and Upcoming Trends in Rhinoplasty
There are four rhinoplasty trends that our medical team sees sticking around for the long term.
#1: The ‘Zoom Effect’
Have all those work-from-home video meetings made you feel self-conscious?
In fact, do you catch yourself examining your nose in angles that you had never even considered before–and become increasingly dismayed at how just unflattering you feel it looks to other people, in a way that the mirror has never shown you?
If so, you wouldn’t be alone. Video calls have caused a significant spike in self-dissatisfaction, with nose shape being among the top reasons. As such, surgeons have seen a surge in rhinoplasty requests. And it’s a trend we see only increasing in popularity as the years go on.
#2: The ‘Natural’ Nose Job
Dramatic nose reshapings—as often seen in celebrities—were popular in the early 2000s. But 2023 and beyond has proven that more people are putting an emphasis on “natural” nose jobs.
This means preserving the overall shape, size, and ethnicity of their nose while seeking to make small refinements. This could be removing or minimizing dorsal humps, straightening the nose, or reducing the size of the tip without seeking ‘perfection’. Some patients claim that these rhinoplasties help make them feel more like themselves, versus trying to look like a different person.
#3: Image Morphing
The ability to “see” your results before surgery is a benefit that more patients want from their rhinoplasty surgeons.
At many offices, surgeons use computer imaging during the initial consultation to help patients visualize their new nose before undergoing surgery. First, this helps communicate the goals of the patient to the surgeon before the procedure. But image morphing also helps ensure patient expectations are in line with results. The result: yielding greater levels of happiness post-operation.
#4: The Combination Approach
More and more frequently, surgeons are being asked to combine a rhinoplasty with other facial treatments: these commonly include face lifts, lip filler, or chin implants.
While not all of these combination surgeries can be done at the same time due to swelling, these multi-pronged approaches work to better enhance the face’s natural symmetry. For example, would a stronger chin compliment a patient’s new nose shape? Is the balance between their lips and their nose still in line? These are all considerations that, when acted on, often make a patient look younger and more refreshed.
