The Beverly Hills Guide to Liquid Nose Jobs

An injection rhinoplasty may be the correct choice for those patients who want to see what their nose looks like with a temporary and reversible cosmetic alteration before committing to the permanent results of surgical rhinoplasty. Our liquid rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills at Sykes Facial Plastic Surgery requires little or no recovery time.

Why Choose Dr. Jonathan Sykes?

Many injectors have little experience with nasal anatomy and the unique aesthetic considerations of the nose. The increased complication rate with nasal filler injections mandates the patient choose an experienced person to perform injection rhinoplasty. In his hands, over 20,000 patients have achieved their goal of looking their best through aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries.

Dr. Sykes is one of the top facial plastic surgeons in the world. He employs careful listening and skillful observation to create a nose that complements the rest of the facial features. An award-winning physician nominated for the William Ride Teaching Award by the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sykes is a trusted expert who will deliver outstanding results.

What is a Liquid Nose Job?

A liquid nose job is a new type of non-surgical rhinoplasty that uses injectable dermal fillers to reshape and recontour the nose. This procedure works very well to build up the nasal bridge or camouflage a depression or nasal hump. In certain patients, botulinum toxin may be injected simultaneously to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or diminish the activity of the depressor muscles of the nasal tip, thereby creating nasal tip elevation. At Sykes Facial Plastic Surgery, we often do liquid rhinoplasty in conjunction with other facial fillers, such as chin augmentation. This maximizes the appearance of the facial profile and the other facial proportions.

Am I a Candidate for Injection Rhinoplasty?

Liquid nose jobs are indicated for patients who do not have an overly large nose but have a nasal hump or a tip that is depressed. Applying dermal fillers above or below the nasal hump can camouflage the hump and create a straight nasal profile. If the filler material is injected into the nasal tip, it can lift it and provide increased nasal tip definition.

The combination of camouflaging a nasal hump, and defining the nasal tip, has a profound aesthetic impact on the nasal and facial profile. If you may be a candidate for injection rhinoplasty, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sykes. He will thoroughly examine your facial anatomy and determine the best plan to help you achieve your goals.

What is the Procedure Like?

Before going into your appointment for our liquid rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills, be sure to follow any preparation instructions if your surgeon gives any to you. These may include avoiding NSAID pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen, blood-thinning medications, and excess alcohol prior to the procedure. Doing so will help minimize bleeding and bruising afterward.

When you come into your appointment, you and your practitioner will discuss your aesthetic goals for your nose if you haven’t already in a prior consultation. Dr. Sykes will then numb you with ice, topical anesthetics, or lidocaine injections. You will then lie in a semi-reclining position while the filler is artistically injected into specific areas on and around your nose.

The needle used is tiny and thin. You may experience slight stinging and pressure as the filler is injected, but it is very tolerable, and Dr. Sykes ensures you are comfortable during the procedure. From start to finish, the whole process usually takes under 30 minutes. Many patients come in and have it done during their lunch hour; it is so quick and easy.

The Recovery Process

You may have a little bit of tenderness when touching or moving your nose (you should try not to, by the way, because it’s best to let the filler settle into position), and you may get a little bit of bruising, but this is easily concealed with makeup. Any swelling, redness, discomfort, or signs you ever had the procedure done at all will be very minimal and resolve relatively quickly. After a liquid rhinoplasty, patients are asked to ice the nose for a few hours and to sit with the head elevated. Any soreness can be relieved with Tylenol or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Advil or Motrin.

When Can I See the Results?

The advantage of a liquid rhinoplasty is that the results are present almost immediately. Patients who have chosen to undergo our liquid nose job in Beverly Hills love their results. Because the swelling is pretty minimal, the results are immediate and representative of the final outcome. After an injection rhinoplasty, your nose may show slight swelling, redness, or bruising for a few days. Still, many patients experience almost no visible effects, even on the day of the procedure. Any signs you ever had a liquid rhinoplasty done are usually only noticeable to the patients themselves and easily concealable with makeup.

What Is a Bellafill Nose Job?

A Bellafill nose job is simply an injection rhinoplasty using Bellafill, a permanent filler injected under the skin to change the shape and contour of the nose. With surgical rhinoplasty, we change the infrastructure of the nose by moving cartilage, removing bone, and suturing. After it heals, we see the new contour, but with an injection rhinoplasty, patients see instant results. However, there are pros and cons to using permanent filler for this type of procedure.

One of the pros of a Bellafill nose job is that it is a permanent change versus other nose jobs using a filler that is absorbed by the body over time, causing the nose to return to the way it was. A permanent filler nose job's cons are ironically the same as the pros. It’s permanent, so it's harder to rectify if you don’t like it. Everybody gets excited over permanence because something positive that lasts is fantastic, but when the result is not favorable, we want it to go away as quickly as possible.

Is Bellafill Right for Me?

Bellafill is a permanent filler that lasts forever. For this reason, it’s essential to choose a skilled surgeon to inject this filler because if too much filler is placed in an area, it may create a permanent bump. There is also always the chance of more serious problems, such as the occlusion of a blood vessel, and with a permanent filler, we can’t dissolve it to free up the blood flow. These are all things to keep in mind, but an expert surgeon like Dr. Sykes can artistically inject without getting lumps, bumps, or occlusions.

Which is the best filler for the nose?

Dr. Sykes prefers fillers that can be reversed. In his years of practice, he has seen some inflammation caused by Bellafill, and if you have that inflammation with a permanent filler, the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out. On the other hand, hyaluronic acid fillers have varying thicknesses and viscosities that can be dissolved. This means that if a lump or bump, any irregularity, or even an occlusion occurs, we can reverse it with the hyaluronidase enzyme that dissolves filler. Many patients who’ve had filler in the nose one or two times tend to opt for surgical rhinoplasty in the future. If Bellafill was used and a patient wants to go the surgical route to make their nose smaller, Dr. Sykes will have to cut the Bellfill out during their rhinoplasty.

How long does a liquid nose job last?

Liquid rhinoplasty is typically performed with hyaluronic acid fillers. These fillers are the safest because they can be reversed with an injection of hyaluronidase if a lump or bump occurs after the injection or if there is an impending vascular compromise. Interestingly, the duration of the results of a facial filler is related to the filler itself and the location it is placed – hyaluronic acid injections into the nose last for a remarkably long time. Although Dr. Sykes quotes a duration of 6-9 months, he has commonly seen them last 1.5-2 years without needing reinjection. Because of the relative immobility of the nasal soft tissues, fillers in the lips last a short time, and fillers in the nose can last much longer.

Does it hurt to get a liquid nose job?

While the nose is a very sensitive area filled with blood vessels and nerves, the vast majority of patients getting liquid nose jobs are pleasantly surprised at how relatively painless the procedure is. The skin can be anesthetized with topical lidocaine cream, and most hyaluronic acid formulations are mixed with lidocaine so that only the initial injection stings. The lower half of the nose has more nerves than the upper half, so if these injections are performed slowly and a waiting period occurs after the first, all subsequent injections are not painful.

Should I get a surgical rhinoplasty or a liquid nose job?

The choice to do an injection rhinoplasty versus a surgical rhinoplasty is a personal choice. When patients are interested in changing the contours of their noses, Dr. Sykes will talk to them about all their options because he performs both injections and surgical rhinoplasties. Liquid rhinoplasty cannot make the nose smaller; however, the advantages of a liquid rhinoplasty are that it makes the nose more balanced. Patients should consider this before making a decision. If you want a smaller nose, you can only achieve this with surgical rhinoplasty.
