Our Philosophy

Our philosophy and approach to faces at Sykes Plastic Surgery differ from many other plastic surgeons. Dr. Sykes believes in making noticeable changes in the face that do not appear to others as though the patient has had a treatment. He calls this “surgery without an operated look;” however, that extends beyond surgery to non-surgical skin treatments. The patient can determine whether they want to have a more or less invasive procedure, but the goal of treatment for Dr. Sykes is ultimately an end result without a “treated or operated” look.

In line with this philosophy, Dr. Sykes believes careful consultation and evaluation of the patient are paramount. After this, he advises his patients on what procedure(s) can best achieve the intended goal for a balanced, refreshed, natural look. Harmony between facial features creates beauty, and Dr. Sykes looks forward to having you in his office to help you achieve your desired aesthetic.

FAQ

Meet Dr. Sykes

Bridgeton, New Jersey. I’m a south Jersey guy at heart and I grew up 2 hours south of my favorite musician, Bruce Springsteen’s home.

I completed my undergrad at The University of Pennsylvania (Go Quakers!), then completed medical school at George Washington University. After that, I went on to complete my residency in head and neck and facial plastic surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago (boy, those were some cold years !)

I then served 3 years as a facial plastic surgeon in The Air Force in Sacramento, California at Mather Airforce base. I then joined the faculty the university of California, Davis medical center where I served as chief of facial plastic surgery for 27 years.

I specialize in all cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries of the face and neck.

I believe in performing surgery but not creating “an operated look.” I feel that changes in the face should be significant but should maintain the patients original appearance. In general, patients want to look improved, but not different.

In medical school, I really enjoyed anatomy and surgery. I was excited about being able to cure someone with my hands. As I proceeded in medical school I realized that I enjoyed solving reconstructive problems with surgery. The face to me is a puzzle that I want to do my best in either putting back together (reconstructive) or improving (cosmetic).

I love helping people and I certainly love changing their face positively to achieve each patients’ wanted goals.

In general, being a good doctor starts with caring for others. My father who taught me a lot and lived until he was almost 100, preached to me to always be kind to others. There are a lot of ways to do this in life, and I knew that any job that I had would have to involve helping people. Plastic surgery performed for injuries, congenital derformities, or cosmetic desires or needs, is just one way of doing this. As it so happens I became good at this and it was natural for me to apply my want to help people to this surgical art.

I love to travel, exercise, and make wine. My winery in Northern California (Newfound Wines) produced 5,000 cases of wine last year.

I love being able to individualize treatment and construct a surgical operation to meet the needs of my patients. The key to this is individualizing treatment, because I realized that every patient used themselves differently and my job is to make them the best version of themselves.

I have not had any true setbacks in my plastic surgery career. However, I have had to realize that the success of my surgery is really related to my patient’s happiness, and each patient has a different idea of what would make them happy. For this reason, I realize the importance of the physiological aspect of plastic surgery. I didn’t understand this connection early in my career. As I have gotten to understand my patient’s psychological needs better, I have become a more caring doctor and surgeon with better outcomes.

Experience

Artistry

Compassion

The mentor that most affected my life was my father. He taught me how to behave, how to be kind, and how to treat other people.

Being a plastic surgeon has humbled me. I have always tried to please people, but I realize in plastic surgery that you cannot please everyone. The knowledge that I’ve tried my best and have often gotten a good result but had a dissatisfied patient is haunting to me. Luckily, this happens very infrequently but when it does, it is very humbling.

I think patients choose me because of my experience and artistry, and of course, by looking at my results. I tend to have patients choose me when the natural results that I achieve resonate with them. Also, I am a caring surgeon who gives every one of my patients my personal cell phone number. Often, patients sense that I am a caring individual and this also makes them choose me.
