Facial Fillers in Beverly Hills
Wrinkles and creases in the face are a natural and inevitable part of the aging process. Facial fillers in Beverly Hills can soften these lines by adding volume to the soft tissues beneath the skin. Beyond smoothing lines in the face, facial fillers – also known as dermal fillers or injectable fillers – can add volume to the contours, changing the shape of the nose, chin, cheeks, temples, and more to create more symmetry and balance. At Sykes Plastic Surgery, you can trust that an artist and master injector will contour your face to create more overall harmony.

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body found in the skin and cartilage, and other materials that add temporary volume to the facial contours until the body absorbs them. These stabilized, soft, injectable gels immediately plump up wrinkles, folds, and hollowed contours in nearly any area of the face.
With artistic injections strategically placed within the tissues, dermal fillers can do anything from smoothing wrinkles to changing the shape of the nose or chin, adding lift to the cheekbones, and restoring volume to hollow facial regions.
What Does It Feel Like to Get Fillers?
WHAT TYPES OF FILLERS ARE OUT THERE?
Dermal fillers are not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are many brands and variants of this wonderful substance with different properties.
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in your skin, and it helps keep your skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are very soft and gel-like and provide instant results that generally last between 6 to 12 months before your body gradually and naturally absorbs the filler.
Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero are all HA filler brands that, depending on the iteration and formula, can add beautiful volume to lips, undereye hollows, cheeks, jawline, and more.
- Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers: Like hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite is a naturally occurring substance, but this one is primarily found in our bones. The consistency of a CaHA filler is usually thicker than HA fillers and typically lasts longer, but this also means that it shouldn’t be placed in delicate areas like the lips or around the eyes. CaHA fillers like Radiesse are best used to treat areas like nasolabial folds, cheeks, temples, and chin.
- Poly-L-lactic Acid Fillers: This biostimulator filler is a safe, biocompatible, and biodegradable synthetic substance that is most commonly used in dissolvable stitches. One of the benefits of a poly-L-lactic acid filler like Sculptra is that its main mechanism to smooth fine lines is by stimulating your natural collagen production rather than sitting beneath the skin until your body absorbs it.
It’s important to remember that fillers are different than botulinum toxin injections like Botox; fillers work to temporarily restore volume, and treatments like Botox work to temporarily freeze specific muscles.
WHAT YOUR BEVERLY HILLS FILLER TREATMENT LOOKS LIKE AT SYKES PLASTIC SURGERY
After you’re welcomed into our Beverly Hills penthouse office, you’ll be brought into your treatment room where you’ll relax in the chair and review your plan with an aesthetic nurse on Dr. Syke’s team.
Your procedure for dermal fillers involves carefully targeted injections into the treatment areas outlined during your consultation. Some facial fillers contain a numbing agent, but your nurse will also apply a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the entire procedure.
Most treatments take 15 to 45 minutes, and you may resume your daily activities immediately afterward. The team recommends waiting to resume more strenuous activities and avoiding the sun while the treatment settles into your tissues over the next couple of days. Any potential swelling, redness, or tenderness will subside with rest, ice packs, and arnica gel.

ARE FILLERS SAFE?
It’s important to note that only FDA-approved filler products should ever be injected into your face, and always by a certified, experienced professional. Choosing an experienced injector who can determine the precise type, placement, and amount of filler will significantly reduce any risks of side effects that can occur after treatment
It is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and some lumps or bumps after injections, especially in areas where the skin is thinner, like the lips, lower eyelids, or cheeks. These irregularities are usually temporary and subside within a few days to a few weeks.
The aesthetics team at Sykes Plastic Surgery is highly skilled and knowledgeable, ensuring that your treatment is safe and comfortable. During your personal consultation, your provider will discuss your goals and create a customized plan to achieve the results you desire.
If you notice any lumps or bumps after your treatment, they can advise on the best course of action, which may include massaging the area or, in rare cases, using a simple dissolving agent.

FILLER FAQS
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved substances that fill out portions of the face, such as the lips, cheeks, jawline, and temples. They are designed to add volume in areas of the face that have lost volume from aging.
Neuromodulators like Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify® are derived from the botulinum A toxin and are FDA-approved medical treatments to relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. Botox can lift and shape the brow, enhance facial symmetry, smooth the skin, correct a gummy smile, and decrease excessive underarm sweating.
There are several classes of dermal fillers. They include hyaluronic acid gels like Restylane or Juvederm; or calcium hydroxylapatite like Radiesse.
Dermal fillers can add volume to the face in areas of deflation. They can also enhance bony structures and, therefore, can improve areas like the jawline or the nose.
Your injector will determine which filler is best for your goals during your consultation.
Any area of the face can be enhanced by a dermal filler. Examples include jawline enhancement, lip augmentation, cheek or mid-face augmentation, and non-surgical rhinoplasty.
The longevity of dermal fillers depends on the type of filler used, the area treated, and your body’s unique metabolism. Generally, hyaluronic acid fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years. Other types of fillers, such as those containing calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, may have longer-lasting effects, ranging from one to two years.
Yes, most dermal fillers, especially those made of hyaluronic acid, can be reversed if necessary. An enzyme called hyaluronidase can be injected into the treated area to dissolve the filler quickly and effectively.
The sensation of getting fillers is often described as a mild discomfort, similar to a slight pinch or quick bee sting at the injection site. However, with the numbing agents and anesthetics, any discomfort is minimal and well-tolerated. You may feel a sense of fullness or tightness in the treated areas, which should subside as the fillers settle and the surrounding tissues relax.
The length of time a filler lasts is related to the specific area of the face and the product used. Some products are stronger and take longer to be reabsorbed. Thinner products may absorb faster.
Other factors that contribute to filler longevity include the area where it is injected. For instance, in the lower eyelid or nose, where there is very little facial movement, the filler will last a longer period, often lasting 1 to 2 years. In the lips, on the other hand, there is a large amount of motion; therefore, lip fillers often do not last longer than 6 months. The interval between injections relates to several factors, including how the patient perceives their appearance.
There is a slight amount of discomfort with the injection of dermal fillers. However, pain is very minimal in most instances and well-tolerated. The filler substance is often mixed with lidocaine, and this substance minimizes post-operative discomfort.
Your provider can also apply a topical anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
There is usually no downtime after the injection of dermal fillers, but in thin, sensitive areas like the lips, swelling may occur right after treatment and will continue to swell over the next couple of days. Patients may also have bruising that may keep them out of work for a day or two, but most of our patients return to work immediately.
For 24 hours before your filler treatment session, avoid taking blood thinners, drinking alcohol, or eating sodium-heavy meals. These factors can increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling. Staying hydrated and taking an arnica capsule beforehand will help reduce the chances and severity of bruising.
It is important not to overdo dermal filler injections; a conservative approach during your first session is key. This is, of course, related to the skill and visual eye of the injector. As expert injectors, the team at Sykes Plastic Surgery ensures you will receive natural-looking dermal filler results.
Bumps from fillers usually subside on their own. Massaging the area can help reduce their appearance, but for more persistent bumps, a small amount of hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers. It’s an additional expense, so we often recommend waiting to see if the bumps improve first.
Bumps can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, especially in the lips. Their appearance is uncommon but not abnormal, and they often resolve without intervention.
